About SaltDogg

Tailgate and V-box spreaders for salt, sand, and pre-treated material.

SaltDogg is the spreader line within the Buyers Products family. The platform covers tailgate spreaders for half-ton patrol trucks, hopper-style V-box spreaders for full-size plow trucks, the MDS Combo Body that doubles as a year-round dump and spreader chassis, and pre-wet kits that integrate liquid pre-treatment into either the tailgate or hopper configuration. Stainless steel hoppers (no rust through, no salt corrosion), variable-speed augers, and a controls package that pairs cleanly with Buyers electrical and Force America closed-loop controllers.

The lineup is organized by chassis class and route mix. Tailgate spreaders (TGS Series) bolt on the rear of a half-ton or three-quarter-ton dump body for patrol and parking-lot routes. V-box spreaders (SHPE Series, PRO Series) replace the dump body on a full-size plow truck for high-volume material distribution on arterial routes. The MDS Combo Body is the stainless V-body that doubles as a dump body and a spreader, with pre-wet option, so a chassis runs aggregate in summer and salt in winter without swapping bodies. Pre-wet kits (gravity-fed and pressure-fed) add liquid pre-treatment to any of the above for departments running an anti-icing program.

Brown Equipment Company is an authorized SaltDogg dealer. The spreader is the most-replaced item in our parts catalog on Midwest plow trucks (Februaries are hard on augers and chain), so we stock cross-augers, spinner discs, hopper screens, and controller wiring deep. Factory-trained service at our seven Midwest centers. Most stocked items ship same-day upon request from our Indianapolis distribution center.

Frequently Asked

SaltDogg: Common Buyer Questions

Answers to the questions municipal fleets and contractors ask most often before specifying SaltDogg equipment.

What is the difference between a tailgate spreader and a V-box spreader?
A tailgate spreader bolts on the rear of an existing dump body and distributes material via an auger and spinner. Lower capital cost, sized for half-ton through medium-duty chassis, can be swapped on and off the truck seasonally. A V-box spreader replaces the dump body entirely with a dedicated material hopper. Higher capacity, supports closed-loop electronic controls, sized for full-size municipal plow trucks running arterial routes. Both have their place; most departments run V-box on the big trucks and tailgate on patrol and parking-lot units.
What is the MDS Combo Body?
The MDS is SaltDogg's stainless combination body that runs as a V-spreader in winter and a dump body in summer. The chassis hauls aggregate, asphalt, sand, and topsoil through the warm months, then converts to salt and sand spreading through winter, with optional pre-wet integration. Common spec on mid-size municipal fleets that want one chassis instead of two for year-round utilization.
What is pre-wet and why does it matter?
Pre-wet is the practice of wetting solid road salt with a liquid (typically calcium chloride or salt brine) before it leaves the spreader. The wet salt sticks to the road instead of bouncing off and into the gutter, so a department uses 20-30 percent less salt per lane mile for the same melt result. Pre-wet also activates the salt faster at low temperatures. Pre-wet kits add the liquid tank, pump, and metering to a tailgate or hopper spreader.
How does SaltDogg pair with Force America controllers?
SaltDogg spreaders are designed around closed-loop electronic spreader controls (Force America is the most common). The controller talks to the spreader's auger and spinner motors via CAN or analog signals, and the hopper / auger geometry supports the controller's flow model. Result: material rate stays consistent across truck speeds, and the calibration sheet salt-savings numbers hold up in the field.
Does SaltDogg work with SnowDogg plows on the same truck?
Yes. SnowDogg plow + SaltDogg spreader + Buyers hydraulics + Buyers electrical is the standard BEC plow truck package on the Buyers Products platform. Single bill of materials, single warranty contact, single shop for service.
What service and parts support does BEC offer for SaltDogg?
Authorized dealer with the deepest spreader parts inventory in our catalog. Cross-augers, spinner discs, hopper screens, controller wiring, and replacement controller modules stock at our service centers. Most stocked items ship same-day upon request from our Indianapolis distribution center. Factory-trained service at all seven Midwest locations.
