Hot mix starts losing workability as soon as it leaves the plant, and material placed after it has cooled is harder to compact into a lasting patch. A patching trailer's real job is to hold the load at placing temperature from the first pothole of the day to the last, and to let workers get that material out without digging into the pile.

This new SPH-2.0 carries 3 tons (2.0 cubic yards) of mix in an air-jacketed hopper with a center heat riser, which puts burner heat into the middle of the load instead of only along the walls. The sloped hopper floor feeds material by gravity down to a stainless steel shovel platform, so workers dispense from the platform rather than reaching into the box. A gas-shock lift assist on the top door eases loading at the plant, and the trailer rides on electric brakes.
